Congratulations to the corner of Penn and Braddock Avenues in Point Breeze! You now have pedestrian crosswalk signs, which may soon be functional. No more people darting across your intersection as they get off the bus, playing chicken with the drivers making lefts onto Penn Avenue. Let's see if the lights make any difference to the drivers gunning it through red lights, especially eager bus drivers.
And condolances to the corner of Mathilda Street and Penn Avenue, and to the many other corners like it in Friendship and Garfield, who will be losing a mail box. The boxes were scheduled to be removed in early December, but are hanging around reminding us of how little we supposedly use them- that's the reason given on the notice for their removal. The notice instructs users to inquire about the next nearest blue box at the post office on Liberty Avenue in Bloomfield, many blocks away.
Residents of other Pittsburgh neighborhoods have also noted the removal of post boxes on their corners. Earlier last year, reduction of mail services city wide was reported in the Pittsburgh Post Gazette. But there seems to be a history of low blue mailbox numbers in lower income, historically "underserved" areas.
Hello, K.L.,
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking of going car-free myself after the mechanic called yesterday to say my Honda 94 Accord wagon will cost $831 for rotors to pass inspection, cost $300 last month for a tuneup, and my car insurance installments of about $145 each are due the first three months of the year. Am I just being impulsive? What else should I be thinking about?
Signed,
Had a great walk/bus/borrowed car trip to work this a.m.
Thanks for your comment, Jennifer! I am sorry to hear about your car. Impulsive? I don't think so. But my first response is why are you carrying so much insurance on a '94 model- does that include collision insurance? On older model cars, insurance companies will rarely pay for collision repairs that total more than the value of the car, so carrying the insurance just costs you more money for nothing.
ReplyDeleteWhat I thought about most when making the decision about giving up the car was the expensive of the beast over the course of the year. Insurance, repairs, inspection, maintenance like tires and oil changes. What would I spend on all of that over the year, versus buying a newer car or going car-free?
My next biggest concern? If I could get MOST places I usually go without a car, and how comfortable- or uncomfortable- that would be for me. What is your comfort level?
